Frigiliana

Frigiliana is a charming, white town located in the Sierra Almijara mountain range, about 60 km from Malaga and just 11 km from Nerja.

As the historical remains indicate, the city was probably built by the Phoenicians, and the name derives from the unidentified Roman sign Frexinius and -Ana, which together may mean the family seat. During the development of the city, streets and houses were built tightly together and in such a way that the territory could be closed with a gate, thus creating an inaccessible area.

Frigiliana it  one of the most authentic examples of traditional Arab architecture in Spain. The city, on the other hand, has received many awards for maintaining traditional buildings and caring for the multicultural heritage as well as for the beauty of its town.  

Today, this small town is made up of white villas picturesquely situated on the slopes of the mountains and narrow streets with steep stairs climbing up the rocky slopes,  among palm trees and flowers.

In August, the Festival of Three Cultures is held here to commemorate the historical coexistence of Christians, Muslims and Jews. The highlight is the "Battle of the Rock of Frigiliana" in 1569, during which the Christians won against the Moors, thus losing one of their last headquarters in Spain.  

What is definitely worth seeing in Frgiliana is the Old Town, San Antonio Church, Castle of Lizard, Archaeological Museum, or simply beautiful white houses

and narrow streets with flowers in a true Spanish style.
